Who Cares?

I may not make much sense here (Like I ever do!) but to be this is something very serious and if someone out there can answer these questions or offer practical advice…. Do tell me….

All these marketing experts talking about branding and positioning and what not… who talks about the branding of a country? both in the country and for it’s representatives outside?

I mean, how easy is it to make spellbinding website that have cool flashes and mind blowing pictures. We all have heard of Joomla and Picassa right?

The first contact with the country determines the persons impression… for example. I am ashamed to call myself an Indian outside the Indian Embassy in KL and maybe in any part of the world. A citizen deserves to be treated with respect. Just because there are so many of us everywhere.. does not mean that we do not have value..

Start my trying to access the embassy website.. Can I please know who the admin is?? I would like to give them an award for designing one of the best puzzles/ riddle/ maze ever! I would also like to meet the content provider.. Where did they learn the language they are writing in? looks like English, uses the English alphabets, but.. any resemblance to that language ends there.. 45 minutes of browsing and all the relevant information I find is the contact number hidden under some debris.

Then try to call the embassy.. spend a few days (at the least) to get someone to pick up the phone, then spend another few hours getting them to understand you in English or Hindustani, then wait on the line as they pass you on to the relevant person, who for some reason is always in a meeting or out for lunch… so you are asked to call back.. when you ask what time and if you can ask for that person etc.. you are told, “ Does this look like a hotel? Call and talk to whoever answers” (like anyone will!). So finally after a few days.. weeks.. months.. you get that person on the phone and manage to explain to them what you need and they give you the list of documents you need. You confirm this with them and are told very rudely if they would know it or you!

Then.. you GO to the embassy and drive past it 3 times thinking that perhaps that’s a shelter for the homeless or a rubbish heap.. but NO .. it’s the Indian High Commission! Now you know why all the visitors who come to India from the other countries are convinced that we all live in slums and have public toilets and use elephants and buffaloes to move around (Yes eco friendly!)

Then you stand outside the embassy in queues for HOURS.. sweating… burning… scared to leave the “line” because it is just so long.. does not matter what I am there for.. whether it is to apply for a visa or register a death (BTW according to the signboard.. I have to register my own death!) or even meet the darn ambassador. I have to stand in the SAME line (isn’t it more efficient to have separate lines for faster processing).. Then by the grace of the security guard… you are allowed inside.. to stand in another “line” to get a queue number.. The lady at the counter.. did she suck lemons for breakfasts or does she have constipation or is the Indian Foreign Services training them how NOT to smile and be customer friendly? Wish has good morning and she looks at you like you are a miscreant.. so finally you have a queue number, so now you try to find a seat..

Do people forget all form of behavior and conduct once they enter the embassy premises? I think they also forget that they have to mingle with other people and thus they might want to brush their teeth or wear clean clothes or you know … use a deodorant?.. so then you brave men sitting on two- three seats with their legs spread out, while the women and elders stand.. and DON’T even try to use the washroom!

Your number is called… you TRY to approach the counter but there are atleast 5 people there, who are trying to pass their applications etc. you make it to the counter and smile at the lady there, who I think has had her facial muscles snipped off … You tell her what you want and give her the complete document set.. and then she says.. I want 37 copies of this and I cannot accept this as this is a double sided photocopy or because it looks nice etc.. so you politely tell her what the voice at the end of the telephone told you and she says that they don’t know anything (Like I did not know that!) then you leave the counter and go to the photocopy machines .. get the copies, stand in line, get a queue number and then again reach the counter.. the lady pretends she has NEVER seen you before.. so you hand over all the documents and tell her you are there for.. lets say.. attesting your marriage certificate.. so she first makes you run to the other part of the town to get a form signed by your husband.. run back.. then asks you for the “attested copy of the marriage certificate” (DUH YOU STUPID MORON.. WHAT AM I HERE FOR?)… Finally you submit your documents…..

By the time you leave.. You are tired of all the non Indians there staring at you with pity and seriously reevaluating their decision to visit India…. You are glad that you are still alive and have not turned into cattle….

WELCOME TO INDIA PEOPLE! Seriousllyy!! I wont even go into what happens when I go to COLLECT the papers I have submitted!

So what do you say? Would you want to visit my beautiful country if you have never been there before, your only reference is the poverty porn slumdog millionaire and the embassy?

I say, I volunteer to give customer service training classes to the staff and I volunteer to rewrite the website.. Please LET ME! Consider it my SR deed.. I know it is a sawab e jaria.. (life long brownie points) from who ever visits the website.. I also volunteer to donate 50 RM a month, so that they can paint the damn embassy and make it look respectable?? The national palace is being constructed across the road and the high comm. Looks like the garbage dump.

WAKE UP you stupid morons! Whats the use of the “Amazing India” campaign when you cant handle one shitty embassy. No wonder they did not allow you on the Ampang Embassy Row and stuck you in the wilderness of Jln Duta.

The Tigress!

Why do people write blogs? What is so important that they have share it with the world? Well, I know you are asking me the same, aren’t you? J

Well.. truth me told, I don’t have anything of value to share with all of you.. so go on.. Leave! I just love to write and write when the urge strikes me. Used to write diaries once upon a time, till a nosy brother found it! Since then I write letters and now that I have something called a blog.. I rant here!

It’s Chinese New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai and all that! Welcome to the year of the Tigress! Yes, I can hear you out there.. saying that it is tiger not tigress.. But think about it

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, which commences on February 14, 2010 and ends on February 2, 2011. The Tiger is the third sign in the Chinese Zodiac cycle, and it is a sign of bravery. This courageous and fiery fighter is admired by the ancient Chinese as the sign that keeps away the three main tragedies of a household. These are fire, thieves and ghosts.

Tigers are physically powerful, gracious, independent and brave, they are extremely bold animals. They are friendly and loving but can also selfish and short tempered. Tigers live dangerously which often leads to trouble. They are intolerant, take risks and are always searching for excitement. Tigers are also instilled with a good dose of courage. The Tiger has an overpowering attraction and is very kind and always takes on the character as protector. The Tiger flourishes by power and attention and takes advantage of all circumstances it gets itself into. The Tiger is a natural leader and loves to be the centre of attention. As a rebel it goes up against authority and speaks out about wrongs in society, and willingly puts up objections. Even if you don’t agree with the beliefs of the tiger you admire his way to protest.

When people think of tigers, it is their vigor and power that comes to mind first. But it has also been noted that tigers are known to share and are unselfish animals. The reason people admire the tiger is due to the fact that they are ferocious and domineering on the outside, but they are just as noble and distinguished on the inside.

People that are born in the Year of the Tiger are generally well liked because of their charismatic personalities. Often, failing at a given duty or being unproductive in his personal or professional life can cause a Tiger to experience a deep sense of depression. A Tiger is always at their happiest when they endeavor to climb the ladder of success. Attaining the top spot is his foremost purpose; being in a position of power is her ultimate goal. They are quick learners and need to be challenged.

They are natural born leaders and perform at their best if working towards positions of power and influence. So once there is no further room for progression, they will often move on to something else.

Anyone that is born in the Year of the Tiger is usually straightforward and outgoing by nature. They will never give up no matter how aggravated they may become. But, they are also full of suspicion and at times will take hasty action. Never lose sight of the fact that Tigers are smart and instinctive.

All characteristics of a strong woman! So I say welcome to the year of the Tigress! ROOOOOAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soon going to be 2 years since I have been in Malaysia! Sometimes seems such a short time and sometime (and I know you all agree with me) it seems like forever!

To me Malaysia is one of the best countries I could have moved to. Has such a strong Indian influence that sometime don’t feel away from home at all! The food is so beautiful, the people are so lovely, the places so mind boggling! What is there NOT to love about Malaysia! I mean You have all you need! Saya sayang kamu Malaysia!

Nearly every day has been a learning experience! Some pleasant and some not so pleasant.. but all learnings none the less! Decided to put down some of the gems.. not in any particular order.. just as I remember them!
  1. Things on the road to be afraid of!: There are ONLY 2 things I am afraid on , on Malaysian Roads (sometimes even off it!).

One are the buses. Imagine a scenario.. it’s a pleasant night, you are driving in your relevant lane on the highway.. cruising along, listening to the radio, talking to your beloved.. When all of a sudden a behemoth draws up behind you and suddenly blazes it’s monstrous eyes at you.. Your entire car is filled with light and you feel like the aliens have arrived to take you away! Hmm.. No am not done yet.. then the behemoth refuses to slow down and slowly inches closer and you in turn have to inch closer to the poor innocent fellow in front of you and scare the bejesus out of him! So How??

The second thing I am scared of are the lady drivers! (Yikes My mom is cracking her whip for that prejudiced comments!) but its true! Lady Drivers are scary! the blonde one / the mat salleh one will be trying not to panic and looking all around to see where disaster will strike.. Will one come out from under the car or will one fall from the sky!

The Indian one will be driving all over the roads.. who cares where the lane lines are! Who cares if it says Jalan Sehala.. it’s a democracy la!

The Chinese one will be stylishly dressed to the nines and putting on her lipstick while drinking coffee and talking on her cell phone and signing to the lady next to her!

The Malay ones… Hmm.. What the Hell! Its my road.. HOW Dare You show an INDICATOR! Grrrrr.. everytime I see that blinking light.. I will speed up and cut u off the MOMENT you think you have found an opening!

Sometimes I pity the men.. Almost!
  2. The golden rule of driving in KL: If you can see it, does not mean you can reach it! Need I say more?
  3. The other golden rules of driving in KL: It is our duty to save the environment.. so if we miss an exit.. even if by a mile… its ok to move into the left hand lane and reverse as fast as you can.. No! no need to worry about the poor chap who is driving along peacefully and sees the backside of a car reversing at him in full speed! That’s what the National Heart Institute is for!

Those pesky signs on the road that say 80Km/HR and all that stuff.. well unlike in other countries, in Malaysia it means that you have to be at that speed at minimum or else you will be fined!
  4. The relationship between the city beautification department and the city road works department: Where ever one will put a road sign, the other will plant a lush huge tree in front of it or vice versa!
  5. Parking: Utilisation of space is very important! Why waste time, energy and money going into that car park 5 meters away when you can park on the kerb or better still on the pavement, in the middle of the road, on the traffic island or on the wall? Its all in the spirit of utilising space in the best way!
  6. The T Shirts: I have finally come to the conclusion that they don’t read what they print and they don’t read before they wear the T-Shirts.. seen on a girl yesterday (wearing the scarf/ tudung), “I am not a prostitute, I just enjoy it! Seen on a guy.. “ I miss you all the time.. sometimes” !!
  7. The hair: I wonder how much time does an average Malaysian young adult spend in front of the mirror and how much does the hair gel and hair color industry contribute to the national GDP ?
  8. Obsession with Beauty Products! Jeez! Just pick up a magazine.. ANY magazine.. from Chips to the Tatler or NuYou.. more than 50% dedicated to what will whiten your skin and make you look like your new born daughter or make you look like a pea cock who escaped from the zoo!
  9. Sugal Flee means you buy the doughnut/ coffee and get flee sugal with it!
  10. The people are amazing! Always smiling, always ready to help and guide.. till you step into a restaurant/ store.. then all bets are off! No.. we don’t care that you have come to spend your money and buy our products. No we don’t care that you are hungry and would like to get food for which we will pay.. We will not serve u.. We will look in the other direction while handing you your menu.. we will attempt to give you a bath with ice water while pouring you a drink and will give you dirty stares if you as much as dare to order!
  11. Malaysians have 2 national pass times.. the food and the shopping! Best is when both can be combined! :)
  12. Communication is best done via Facebook! So go together to a restaurant, sit down, whip out your laptops, log into the WiFi and now talk to each other via FB or YM! Rocks!
  13. I have seen massive gatherings only in 2 conditions.. one when there is food and others when there was a mini riot.. well most of the times both are mutually perpetuated!
  14. I love this country. The people are so amazing! Everyone is always smiling, eager to help put. One of the only places where I get accurate traffic directions!
  15. I love the food.. Ok most of it! :) (don’t think will get used to the other stuff u know!)
  16. The gusto with which each festival is celebrated.. the festival markets, the rituals , the way everyone opens their heart and homes for their friends and loved ones
  17. And maybe more than anything.. I LOVE the Twin Towers!

Hmmm I think I had better stop now! But I can think of at least another 800!! (I did say more than 1 learning a day!) am I missing out anything?

Hmmm I did say I have nothing to say :) But then I also said that I was in the mood to babble!

Ciao till next time!

Random Thoughts.......

This is really funny! I have this sudden yen to really write about a whole lot of things.. Hmm lets just say that despite my best intentions.. I have to voice my opinions! :) so here I Go!

What's with all this racial violence eh? I know I will get trashed and slammed for this, but what the whatever.. It is MY ALLAH! :) I believe that God is one , it's our different ways of getting to him/ her that are different (Imagine if all of us had different Gods.. remember what happened on mount Olympus?). Why should you take offense if someone from another religion uses the term that you use for your God in one of their publications! Alamak! so much furor just because a christian publication used the word Allah! I believe that Allah is above all of this.. He does not need us to "protect" him. He is all almighty and small sallies like this do not effect him. These are doings of the being we would call Iblis (also known as politicians!) who are destroying the peace in this beautiful country for their own benefit!

I witnessed something very beautiful.. we were sitting in traffic caused by these multiple violent demonstrations.. This old lady got out of her car on Kerenchi Link and actually walked to 5-6 cars with youngsters inside and told them what was happening and requested them to remove their crosses and their Allah / Mohammed names hanging from their rear view mirrors.. I heard what she had to say when she was talking to the youngster in the car next to me... she told him what was happening and asked him to remove all religious insignia, not to demean his particular religion or ask him to hide, but because there were bad and stupid people around who would hurt him unecessarily.. Why cant we have more understanding people like that.

Guys get it straight.. Allah did not ask you to burn down other people's places of worship or threaten their lives, safety and family.. Islam is a religion of tolerance.. so LEARN tolerance!

Malaysia is a harmonious mix of cultures.. Please lets not ruin it!

Why Should I Pay More for the SAME Fuel?
Hmmm.. the other day I was reading the newspaper that from sometime later in the year.. the govt is planning to charge seperate prices for petrol! anyone with a Malaysian I-Kad will get subsidised fuel, while others (read expats) get to pay nearly double the current price!! yes! You are allowed to now laugh! Can you imagine what is going to happen? the outrage! the rationale... Non Malaysians come to Malaysia, command higher salaries, drive gas guzzlers so why should they not pay more? Ok now.. don't the expats pay taxes, tolls etc? Don't they pay higher interest rates on loans bounded by their work permits? Isn't Malaysia's economu geared towards tourism and attracting foreign human traffic to enjoy the amazing country? Now look at this scenario.. the price division happens.. expats start giving up their cars.. International automotive brands move out of the country, emabssies react, MNC's don't hire expats, tourism is affected, hospitality is affected, education is affected, retail is affected.. luxury brands start moving out.. luxury malls shut down.. think about it!

Forget all of that. think of the logisitical nightmare! installing machines EVERYWHERE to track all this.. the cost alone would nullify any benefit that the proposers are expounding on!

Well,... on the upside.. No more traffic jams in the city centre!

Finally Recognised As An Indian!

I face a very weird problem here... almost No One recognises me as an Indian :( even when I speak In Hyderabadi/ Urdu/ Hindi.. I am praised for "being a foriegner and learning the language like a native"!!!! Grrrr!!!!!!!!!!! or that I am too white to be an India.. WTF! But well.. the other day I called up a few media as a follow up for a press release and one of them wrote back to our account director asking why I had a "weird" Indian accent! yahooo!!!!! face recognition or not! Voice recognition to hain na! :) Jai Ho !

If You are reading this (Hmmm I would like to think someone reading all these ramblings....) look at the sky.. never seen such beautiful skies in a long time!

Hasta La Vista!
(and why did you cringe like that was a threat!)

Ghosts of NYE's Gone By

Hmmm,, one more year ends.. the rush to get those party tickets starts... running to the stores to get the "perfect" dress.. sitting in a massive traffic jam to get to that "perfect" party.. No offense..but some of my best memories of new years gone by are not of these noisy, over crowded parties (Hmm! No I am not jealous! I have invites to the Zouk bash... ) but of really special celebrations.. In no particular order,, listing some of them down....

  1. 91-92 : The Strings, Sar kiye yeh pahad concert... nearly first row ticket, singing out loud with Dad and unlimited Pakola Ice Cream Soda
  2. 91-92 : Playing Hide& Seek with rare turtles that our family friend had saved and was preserving... hiding was easy! the finding took 2 days!
  3. 92-93: Zahid uncle's wedding !
  4. 95: celebrating in Dhoraji in Hashim Mansion, meeting my great grand father's ghost! (No am NOT kidding or fibbing or any ing!)
  5. 96: eating potato fried rice on the water tank with Poori
  6. 97: baking a secret cake in Surat!
  7. 99: Back Stage help with one of Karishma's first BIG shows! :) and meeting some really cutie pies.. who of course had eyes only for K.. But what the hell!
  8. 02: Khurram saying Ballls to the New Year! coz he could not come with K, and then we riding on the back of a hilux to get to the party and then hitching a lift back into town!
  9. 03-04: Sitting in the middle of Vishrantwadi road with army tankers moving on both sides! And Saluting the soldiers with cups of tea!
  10. 07: a mad mad mad night at Shalini's place... with Lucy and gang! yeah there were some party poopers there.. but.... nothing beats bringing in the new years , sitting on a ledge 7 floors above the ground with your BFF holding onto you for dear life!
  11. 08: Once again at Shalini's place.. theres food, theres music, theres sheesha (For a while! before it was sacrificed) , there;s Razi with me and some awesome company!! once again.. sitting on that ledge.. this time razi holding onto me and ANuj and I seeing if we can see from the old rifle's sight! (No it was not loaded!) and playing Uno and LIfe till God alone knows when..and then getting screamed at coming home at God Alone Knows When!
What does this year hold?

Sugar Free

The following post has no intention of hurting any sentiments.. Rather I felt that it was something funny & beautiful... this is me looking inside the asylum as the "expat" wife! so read on

So, we had a nice dinner at one of the restaurants @ KLCC and were walking about looking for some
"healthy" (snicker!) dessert... what do we see.. a Dunkin Donut!! I clomp in.. look at the selection at the counter... hear a diminutive "may I help you?", look up and ask this lovely lady for a sugar free Donut........... She looks at me and says, "What?" , I say, "Sugar Free Donut la"... she says.. "one minute", I wait...... I can see her conferring with a senior... serious discussion.. lots of gestures and eye rolling.......

So comes back this young lady.. and says, "What you want?", and me.. not ready to give up yet... ,says.. "Sugar Free Donut".... She cocks her head to one side and gives me a look which says, "there are Strange people in this world!", walks over to the donut case, takes out the fattest , whitest, sugar dusted donut and says........ "You buy this la... you pay for donut... sugal flee!"

Hmm... so this happened like, more than a year ago.. at that time my knowledge of Bhasa was limited to makan and terima kasih... I cursed, I laugh... but.. why do I mention it now?? Yesterday I went to GSC @ Mid Valley to see a movie and was at the counter waiting for my pop corn and this guy comes back and says that there is no salted pop corn and that I should take the caramel one.. and before I can say anything.. this girl, who is at the next counter.. looks at me, smiles and says, "No la... caramel pop corn no sugar free.. you give her corn in a cup.. that sugar free!" and gives me a thumbs up! I just stand there looking at her.. and she says.. I met you at Dunkin Donut last year.. You made me realise the meaning of sugar free, remember me?!!!!

Life.... What can I say

A Sad Day

Note: OK well I am not really someone who is a blogger! just trying my had at it to see if I really do remember how to write outside of my work anymore

There are so many times, when I sit and bitch about how hard life is for me.... That I have to cook.. and clean.. and that I am don't have a full time job and that I have to sit in traffic jams, that my maid comes once a week... etc.. you get the pic right? but then some stuff happens, which puts my life in perspective and makes me realise how lucky I am... For anyone from Nasr.... it's like. "count your blessings and name them one by one" kinda moment.

Yesterday was a day of sad news.... In the morning, a friend messaged and told me that another friend from college was mentioned in the obituary column :( It was a shocking moment because I "chatted" with her on Face book just a few days ago!! Turns out that she was suffering from Lung Cancer and had been in the hospital for 3 months, but only her closest people knew. Am not going to eulogise about how well I knew her.. and what great friends we were etc.. because the truth is that we were in the same class in college and then later connected via Facebook and kept in touch.. but when I heard about her and how brave she had been, it humbled me! Here was a woman in obvious pain and someone who knew she did not have much time left, but still went ahead and was concerned about everyone around her and did not tell many people about her suffering because she did not like complaining!

Before that and even for a long time after that it was a happy day.. a friend from Germany , came all the way from Glasgow to meet me (yes.. figure that out!) and we went around and had a fun time discovering Menara and BB and KLCC etc... but then we got news that her brother was involved in a fatal accident and had to rush her to the airport and onto a plane back home instantly.. and although she was crying.. not once did she complain or gripe about anything... she was so graceful.. so composed, though you could see she was paining , breaking inside.. I hope she is OK right now.

It's amazing how short life really is.. you think you can do without anyone.. you feel that you are capable of giving up anyone or anything and then something happens to a person on the periphery of your life and bang wham! you realise that you are NOT an island....

Hmmm.... It is a day I will NOT be forgetting for the longest time yet.. the next time I start griping.. am going to remember these two remarkable

Giving Thanks

I recently read a wonderful article in a Magazine called I.M (www.imag.com.my), it's an online magazine, which distributes free copies every month. It's a magazine devoted to Malaysian Individuality and I must say.. I like!

Well coming back ... They had a wonderful article written by J.A.S on Giving Thanks... and that got me thinking... Here I am.. in a place far far away from the place I used to call home till 1.5 years ago... where nearly everyday has taught me something new, a place I am now in love with.... settling here has been an experience and still is!

I got thinking.. what is it that I am thankful about in Malaysia? Yes, aside from all the happiness that Allah has given me .. here is a small list.. in NO particular order....Some of it may seem very trivial, but each of these things is something I say thanks for EVERYDAY! I tried to keep it down to 10.. otherwise this could become like the Iliad!

My Husband:
Yeah yeah! :) I truly am! Here's a man who's more than ready to put up with my madness and well sometimes encourages it! I know I am responsible for any white hair he might get before he is 60 :)

My Friends:
These are men and women who have helped me settle in.. who ground me!Who all can I be thankful about? I have truly been blessed with some wonderful people in my life, some I can think of right now; My first friend in KL, even before I got here, Ani.I would not have known 90% of what I know if it had not been for Jessika & Ani, I would not have known as much Bhasa as I do know if it was not for Rahima, Li-Sa, Andria, Anand and Jessika, I would not have met so many amazing people if it had not been for the awesome women at the International Women Association. Ani, Jessika, Rahima Li-Sa who are my sounding boards, Diane, who always has something awesome to say to me, Datin Pearl who ... who has been Datin Pearl! :), and everyone and anyone who I have missed.. U guys / gals have been the reason I have made it so far in KL :)

The Food:
Oh My God! This is a mecca for a glutton like me! Where ever I look, there's food! I have realised that Malaysians have 2 favourite pass times: Makan Makan and Jalan Jalan :) and they thought, why waste time on doing two different activities.... why not combine them!! It's my kinda country.. U eat u shop u shop u eat.. anytime of the day or night! The choices bewilder, the taste buds in a constant state of excitement! What more can one ask for?

Everyone on Federal Highway! For letting me through! :) Need I say more!

For the Traffic Phone Rangers on the Radio: Who let me know exactly why I am not moving and entertain me while I (patiently?) wait!

For the Trains !
It's fun to see others fuming along with their cars while I whiz away to my destinations and experience how sardines feel @ rush hour!

For the sweets guy @ Masjid Jam
Who makes the most awesome samosas

For the Petronas!
Yes! The twin towers! for some reason, they fill me with inspiration and pride.. friends make fun of me coz I call them MY Petronas! What to do! to me they are a symbol of a nation who's motto is Boleh!

The LAnguage!
Have picked up more BM in a year than telegu in the 15 years I was in AP (Ok yeah yeah! Telengana now), I know nothing to be proud of.. but the sheer exuberance of the language makes you want to learn it! if nothing else, to understand all the excitement! Some of my favourite phrases/ words .. alamak! (Yes! I thought it was a *bad* word for quite a while!), of course Makan! And Boleh! Boleh! to me signifies the spirit of the nation.. NOTHING is impossible.. We CAN! :)

Last, but definitely not the least...... The People!
From the taxi driver, who taught me my first driving lesson (Ma'am in Malaysia, we wait patiently for that guy in front to finish his telefon conversation, we do not honk, even if he is causing a jam for a mile behind!), to the fruit seller who taught me how to identify a ripe mangosteen, to every single person who has smiled at me and corrected me gently when I "try" and speak in Bhasa, who direct me on the roads , who interpret in super markets for me, to the kids at Kuala Selangor, who taught me how to speak to the silver leaf monkeys! To all the policemen who have very patiently listened to me laboriously construct a sentence in BM and then said, " Yes maam, but we can speak English!" To everyone who has ever allowed me to make a royal fool of my self but NEVER ever once laughed, but rather smiled and corrected me!! To everyone who has ever tried to stereotype me. The people in this country have been so wonderful, so warm, so welcoming. Thanks for making me feel like I belong here! Your indefatigable curiosity, your unquestioning acceptance.. humbles me!

I know I have missed out so much... coz everyday I am thankful for something new! well let's just say that I am thankful for being able to be thankful every day!

Share with me.. Tell me what are you thankful for!
